How can I support my child, and what is my students day supposed to look like?

The answer to these questions depends on the needs of each family. We recognize that some students may be at home with younger or older siblings, or that many parents may work during the school day. For that reason our Continuous Learning plan is designed to try to personalize the learning requirements of all families. The support each student will need will look different in every household. Some students may complete their work very quickly while others will struggle with the new concepts. Ask them questions, research the answer together, encourage them to keep trying, and finally never hesitate to reach out to the teacher if you still can’t find the answer. If your student is struggling, take a short break, take a walk, and then come back to the problem. If you are able to schedule a consistent routine everyday it will help. Set a time limit to complete schoolwork, kids respond well to structure and this will help families to avoid stress of doing schoolwork all day long. What you don’t get done that day, will be waiting to finish the next.

What if I think that my student is overwhelmed or that the work is too much?

Ask your student to explain what about it is taking too long, is it the new methods or are they struggling with new concepts. Reach out to the teacher, if you believe it is too much let the teacher know, they may be able to adapt or personalize the work for your student.

What if I don’t think my student is being challenged or that there is not enough work?

Once again, ask your student to explain how they get their work done so quickly, if you feel like they are not doing enough, there are many supplemental enrichment programs that our staff would love to share with you. Once again, we will work to individualize your students needs, just let his or her classroom teacher know how to better meet your students needs.

How will this new Continuous Learning Plan affect my students grades or GPA?

We understand that each students needs and abilities will be different in this new process. We also understand that for grade school students, we will have to spend more time than in the past filling in gaps of learning for students as they move to the next grade level. Each lesson or assignment that your student finishes will help them create connections that will be beneficial to their academic success in the next grade level this fall. Jr. High and High School students will also see the same parallels. Students will receive credit for the work they have done to this point and we will work with each student to complete new lessons that will contribute to there overall grade. GPA’s will be a combination of the 3rd nine weeks grades and what each student is able to complete in this new plan. If you have a question about your student and how they can best finish their year with the grade they want, reach out to Mr. Moeckel at: smoeckel@usd386.net
